The JNS synthetic stones are made in Japan to my own preferences, and you only find them on this site. They go from 220 coarse for repair work up to 6000 and 10000 for finishing, and in between the Aoto, the JNS 800 and 1000 that most people use every day.
I also keep a few synthetics from other makers I trust — Arashiyama, Kitayama and Imanishi — plus the Atoma diamond plates and surfacing stones for keeping everything flat.
Seal your stones, synthetic or natural. Any waterproof lacquer works, or glue them to a wooden base. That is what makes them last a lifetime.
